Where You Look Is Where You Go

Why Focus Matters: Where You Look Is Where You Go
I’ll never forget the moment I slammed into the side of the icy track at 90 miles per hour.
I was barreling down the skeleton course, headfirst on a sled no thicker than a lunch tray, when I lost focus for a split second. My eyes shifted, and in that moment, I wasn’t looking where I wanted to go, but instead, I was looking where I didn’t want to end up. And guess what? That’s precisely where I went.
I learned an unforgettable lesson: where you look is where you go. It’s a lesson I’ve learned over and over again, both on the ice and in life.
The Power of Vision: Lessons from an Olympic Skeleton Racer
That crash was extremely painful, not just physically, but also mentally and emotionally. I could have made excuses. I could’ve said the track was icy, that the conditions weren’t perfect, or that the sled wasn’t cooperating, but deep down, I knew the truth. I had taken my eyes off my goal. I had let fear dictate my focus.
That experience taught me something powerful. It taught me that we always move in the direction of our focus. If we’re constantly looking at what might go wrong, at our fears, our setbacks, or the people who say we can’t… We’ll drift toward those things. But when we fix our eyes on our dreams, our purpose, and the kind of life we want to live, everything starts to shift into place.
Overcoming Fear by Shifting Your Focus Toward Purpose and Goals
We live in a world filled with noise, distractions, doubts, stress, and expectations. But no one else gets to live your life. And if there’s one thing I know for sure, it’s that there are no excuses for not going after the life you were meant to live.
Yes, there will be obstacles. Yes, it will take grit and sacrifice. And yes, there will be many days in our lives when it feels like we have hit an icy wall going 90 miles an hour. The good news is, these challenges can make us stronger. They offer us a chance to re-evaluate our purpose in life and intentionally focus on what truly matters most. I’ve stood on podiums, chased goals that seemed impossible, and continue to raise my children the best I can, not because the path is easy, but because I keep my focus on where I want to go.
If you don’t like where you are, shift your focus. Set your sights on something higher, something meaningful. Don’t let fear or failure become your destination. Let vision, hope, and faith lead the way.
Because in life, just like on the skeleton track, where you look is where you’ll go.
And you, my friend, were made to go far.
