Shane Fisher is a multi-sport athlete and founder of the American Paragons Foundation, an organization dedicated to supporting elite athletes in underfunded sports by helping them overcome the financial and career barriers that often derail Olympic dreams.
From an early age, Shane was driven by a singular goal: to represent the United States at the Olympic Games. Inspired while watching the 2000 Summer Olympics opening ceremony as a child, he became determined to join the ranks of the world’s greatest athletes. His journey began in tennis after meeting mentor Larry Jestice, a former U.S. Olympic tennis competitor who instilled in him the Olympic ideal that the true value of sport lies in the struggle and the pursuit of excellence.
While competing in college tennis, Shane expanded his athletic horizons after training alongside Brazilian Olympic sprinters. Encouraged by their coach, José Barbosa, he transitioned into track and field and spent six years training as a decathlete. Despite limited resources, no sponsorship, and the need to fund his career by coaching tennis and personal training, he committed to an intense daily training regimen and rose to a high competitive level.
In 2022, Shane’s athletic path took another turn when he was identified through a U.S. bobsled recruiting combine. Shortly after submitting his performance data, he was invited to Lake Placid to train with the U.S. bobsled program, launching a new chapter in his pursuit of the Olympic dream.
During his time in elite sport, Shane witnessed a recurring and troubling reality: many talented athletes were forced to leave their sports not because of a lack of ability, but because of financial hardship. Teammates often worked multiple jobs, lived in unstable conditions, or abandoned their Olympic ambitions simply to make ends meet.
Determined to change that reality, Shane founded the American Paragons Foundation. The organization focuses on supporting athletes in small, underfunded, women’s, and adaptive sports by connecting them with opportunities, partnerships, and long-term support structures that make it possible to sustain elite performance.
Through both his personal journey and his work with American Paragons, Shane continues to champion the Olympic spirit—ensuring that talent, dedication, and perseverance, rather than financial limitations, determine who gets the chance to compete at the highest level.
