Renan Dal Zotto,
Senior Contributor

Renan Dal Zotto is widely regarded as one of the greatest indoor volleyball players to emerge from Brazil and, indeed, one of the finest players in the world. His illustrious career, spanning 13 years, began when he donned Brazil’s green and yellow jersey at the young age of 16 in 1976. The following year, he debuted on the international stage at the 1977 FIVB World Cup. By 1981, Renan had already earned global recognition, being voted the best defender and best passer in the world by the FIVB.

Renan's Olympic journey is remarkable, having represented Brazil in four Olympic Games: 1980, 1984, 1988, and 1992. After achieving a fifth-place finish in his first Olympics in 1980 at just 20 years old, Renan led Brazil to a silver medal at the 1984 Los Angeles Olympic Games. His leadership also helped Brazil secure a silver medal at the 1982 FIVB World Championship in Argentina. Among his numerous accolades, Renan claimed three South American Championship titles within a four-year span and won a gold medal at the 1983 Pan American Games.

As a key figure in Brazil’s "Silver Generation," Renan represented his country in three FIVB World Cups, two FIVB World Championships, and three Pan American Games. After five successful seasons playing for various clubs in Brazil, Renan took his talents to Italy. He played four seasons with Maxicono Parma, starting in the 1988-89 season before joining Messaggero Ravenna for the 1992-93 season. During his time in Italy, Renan achieved remarkable success, including winning the inaugural FIVB Men’s Club World Championship in 1989, two Italian league championships, two Italia Cup titles in 1990 and 1992, three European Super Cup titles in 1989, 1990, and 1992, and the 1993 European Champions Cup title.

After returning to Brazil, Renan transitioned from player to coach, leading Palmeiras/Parmalat in the Brazilian Super League. He currently serves as the selection director for the Brazilian Volleyball Federation. In 2001, Renan received several prestigious titles, including the most spectacular player in the world, the best defender in the world, and world’s best spiker of the 20th century. He was also one of the FIVB’s finalists for the best player of the 20th Century.

Renan Dal Zotto's highly decorated career and status as one of the most dynamic players in the history of the sport make it a great honor to welcome him into the 2015 Class of Inductees into the International Volleyball Hall of Fame.
