Don Davis,
Senior Contributor

Don Davis is a pioneering figure in the endurance sports community, best known as the founder of the iconic Survival of the Shawangunks (SOS) triathlon, an event he created in 1984 that continues to challenge and inspire athletes worldwide. That same year, Don also helped launch the New York City Triathlon, establishing himself as one of the early leaders of the multisport movement in the United States.

A lifelong educator, Don dedicated over 30 years to teaching in Newburgh, New York, while fostering his passion for endurance sports and event organization. His deep connection to the Hudson Valley and his innovative spirit led to the creation of SOS—a unique and grueling race set against the stunning backdrop of the Shawangunk Mountains, widely regarded as one of the world's toughest and most beautiful triathlons.

Don earned his BS ('69), MS ('74), and CAS ('79) degrees from SUNY New Paltz, reflecting his long-standing commitment to both education and personal growth. Don is proud of his family beyond his professional and athletic achievements. He and his wife have been married for over 56 years, and in 2020, his son Evan Davis took over as race director of SOS, ensuring the event’s legacy continues for future generations.

Don’s story is also one of resilience. He has overcome significant physical challenges, including limb-lengthening surgery, to maintain his active lifestyle. His journey has been featured by the Hospital for Special Surgery (HSS) and numerous endurance sports publications, underscoring his enduring impact on the triathlon community and his unwavering commitment to living life without limits.
