Deborah L. Stroman Ph.D. CLU

Dr. Deborah Stroman is an enthusiastic educator and entrepreneur at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. She has provided expertise in Sport Business, Entrepreneurship, Leadership/Organizational Behavior, and Equity & Inclusion for over 13 years in the Kenan-Flagler Business School, the Department of Economics’ Entrepreneurship Minor, and the Department of Exercise and Sport Science. She currently has a faculty appointment at the Gillings School of Global Public Health where she instructs graduate students in racial equity and racism analysis. Highly motivated to share her journey and life lessons, Dr. Stroman is a national speaker on topics such as sport business, leadership, entrepreneurship, and racial equity.

Dr. Stroman is the founder and CEO of the Center of Sport Business and Analytics. This business is the host of the nationally-recognized, SPEIA Basketball Analytics Summit, which has been received rave reviews for the insights, networking, and innovative event planning. Additional Center services include consulting for former elite athletes (Life After Sports with Effective Results), a mental health and wellness (No Shortcuts) workshop in partnership with the NFL Alumni Association, and racial equity education, (SPARC) for the athletics industry.

In addition to her academic and Center responsibilities, Dr. Stroman is a radio personality for two radio stations and consults for the National Institutes of Health, sports teams, and sports-related organizations including the NCAA, College Football Playoff, and the Atlantic Coast Conference. She advises numerous startup companies including having served as an Entrepreneur-in-Residence at the award- winning entrepreneurship accelerator American Underground in Durham, NC and a mentor for the Google for Entrepreneurship’s CODE2040 program. Dr. Stroman enjoys being a camp counselor at the prestigious Brant Lake Sports Academy for girls in upstate New York each summer.

As the first Black scholarship female athlete at the University of Virginia, she captained the basketball team in her senior year and was an assistant coach, the first Black female coach, for the University of North Carolina. She stays active biking and playing golf. Prior to her position at UNC, Stroman successfully owned a sport marketing and event planning company and enjoyed a 17-year career in financial services.
