WINNING THE BALL FROM BEHIND - Winning Defensive Skills • Ages 6-9. Former National Champion Player and experienced youth coach Eric De Sousa demonstrates a great way to introduce defending from behind to youth players. At this level, players are often hesitant to make any kind of tackle or attempt to win the ball when behind the dribbler. While patience is important on defense, players should be aware of methods

such as this to apply pressure, and ultimately win the ball, when the opposing player is protecting the ball with their body. Players should keep in mind that this is not the only way to approach defending from behind, but it gives them another option to look out for. Defenders should wait for the right moment, ideally when the player on the ball is static and with their legs a little open, and then poke the ball away from between their legs. They should not commit too strongly or with their entire body weight and maximum momentum, but in a controlled way that will make minimal or no contact with the opposing player during the tackle. This drill helps players get introduced to defending from behind, and allows them to rehearse the movement so that it becomes a habit for when the opportunity arises in game.
