DEFENSIVE STANCE - Winning Soccer Skill. USSF certified coach and former NAIA All-American Mike Araujo demonstrates a drill for soccer defenders to work on the fundamentals of their stance and body position in a 1v1 scenario. The attacker approaches with the ball, and the defender must prevent them from dribbling through the goal behind. Defenders should approach and get into a wide side-facing stance, bending their knees and staying on

their toes. This position allows them to jockey and move with the dribbler, and stay in front of them while waiting for the right moment to tackle. Mastering the fundamentals of a defensive stance is a must for any player in the backline. Player's should rehearse this movement frequently, and be sure to apply it as often as possible in training and game scenarios. This stance allows defenders to be much more nimble and quick when responding to dribbles and changes in direction from the attacker. Defenders should keep in mind that generally in a 1v1 situation their primary objective is stalling the attacker and not getting beat.
