The body is divided into 3 main regions: Head “Olgul”, Trunk “Momtong” and and the lower body part “Arae”. “Makki” is the name of the block in Korean. So we mainly have three Basic blocks: Arae Makki, Momtong Makki and Olgil Makki.
We can use the same block for each of the 3 body regions. This leads to a large array of blocking positions, either with hands or with legs. Also blocks could be different according to the feet position (Stance) and body height.
Taekwondo is an offensive and defensive Martial Art and Sport at the same time. So, yes we can block in taekwondo but allowed blocking techniques are depending on the different disciplines. Poomsae and Free Style Poomsae; Kyorugi and Hanbon, Dobon or Sebon Kyorugi (Step sparring, 1, 2 and 3) and Hochinsul, etc.
