In this video, you'll learn the methods of defending a ball screen. All methods are used to prevent a specific move by the offense, specifically the shot and the drive to the basket. To defend a ball screen, actions are taken by both defenders, the one guarding the ball and the one guarding the screen, to prevent the offense from succeeding. First, the player defending the ball, can go ...over the screen, running shoulder to shoulder off the screen set. The person defending the screen will help their teammate by hedging the ball-handler up the court, and taking over defense until their teammate recovers. This move will prevent the ball-handler from getting an open shot. This move is used on good shooters. On the other hand, when defending quick guards that can drive the ball, the defense should go under the screen. In this situation, the defender guarding the screen will back up and leave ample space for the other defender to slip under the screen, meeting their man on the other side, ready to prevent a drive to the basket.
