TEAM DEFENDING - Winning Defensive Skills for Ages 10-13. USSF certified coach and former NAIA All-American Mike Araujo explains a movement pattern for three defenders to practice closing down an attacker with the ball in this soccer training video. Players should approach the ball together and then enter a defensive stance. They should stay low to the ground with their knees bent, on their toes, and facing the ball sideways. ...They should be ready to quickly move in either direction. Communication is very important, and players should rehearse talking to each other during this movement to prepare for a game. They should tell each other when to step to the ball and when to shift in one direction or another. This drill will help defenders be in the habit of communicating for a game, which is essential. The backline must always be in tune with each other as they have to move together to navigate their offsides line and ensure they don't get caught out by an attacker getting in behind them.
