When it comes to developing a young basketball players jump shot, teaching the correct mechanics and putting an emphasis on form are two of the most important aspects. Next would be putting in the reps. This is where spot shooting comes in. Spot shooting is a drill where the athlete emphasizes correctly stepping into their shot, shooting form, getting the ball up and over the rim, and lastly, following through.

Set up cones or spots on the court, for example, each baseline, each elbow and the free throw line. Make 5-10 shots per spot before moving on. Spots can be moved to anywhere on the court to advance and progress this drill. Spot shooting is an essential warm-up, cool-down, or instructional drill for players of all ages and skill levels to improve and refine their shot.
