PRO INSIDER TIP 3 - GETTING AROUND TOUGH DEFENDERS. Former WNBA player and NCAA star, Toccara Williams, explains a trick she used to use to get open from a defender who was playing her up close and tight. When the defender got too close, she would lightly step on their foot to make them look down or get their attention to go to their foot. As soon as she saw ...the attention being pulled away from her, she would then make her move to get open. Another insider tip she would use was the art of deception when she was on the offensive end. She would go into a movement very explosive going into one direction, which would make the defender shift their weight, speed and power towards that direction. Just when she saw how committed they were to beating her to the spot they thought she was going, she would quickly change her dribble movement and go in the direction they just left. This made it hard for defenders to gather themselves quickly enough to change direction after they already committed themselves in the other direction.
