ADVANCED FREE KICKS - Winning Goalkeeping Skills for Ages 14+. Former Division 1 goalkeeper and experienced goalkeeping coach Brian Galvin explains how goalies should handle freekicks in this soccer training video. First, they set the wall by talking to their teammates. They should say how many players they want in the wall, and talk to one member turned to face them in order to position the wall. Once the wall ...is placed, the goalie should move to just outside the wall towards the far post from the shooter. The goalie should make sure not to be leaning one way or the other but remain balanced and on their toes, ready to make a save in either direction. Teams should practice this frequently, which also gives the defenders and attackers the needed rehearsal of set pieces. It's important that a goalie can set up the wall and other defenders very quickly in a game to make sure the team is organized and ready to deal with the free-kick on time. Throughout the setup, the keeper must also remain aware of the shooter and opposing players to make sure they don't play a quick pass or shot.
