DINKING - PART 2. This lesson demonstrated a couple of returns and how they should be handled by the Serving team to maintain the Blocker and Workhorse roles and the concept of ‘releasing’ a player on the serving team to advance up to the NVZ. This session is important because we need to convey how Blocker Workhorse is used everywhere on the court and how it helps the serving team achieve the objective of advancing up the NVZ and getting to neutral with the return team.
The purpose of this lesson is to show how the serving team can be most effective in achieving their aim of advancing up the NVZ and getting to neutral with the return team by utilizing their roles of Blocker and Workhorse
The key focus of this lesson is:
Know your role as either Blocker or Workhorse as the serving team
Play 2 against 1 by targeting the deeper opponent and advance up to the NVZ, maintaining your roles and responsibilities
Avoid hitting to the opponent already at the NVZ
Pickleball players who are able to replicate the methods outlined in this session will be more successful in winning points by effectively advancing to the NVZ and getting to neutral with the return team. They are shown the most effective ways to play 2 against 1 and hit to the opponent in a position least likely to hurt them as they work to advance up to a strategically even position.
To master this strategy, you first need to understand the concept of workhorse/blocker and how to utilize the little v and the big v. Visit our site and watch the “Blocker/Workhorse dinking (Part 1)” and “Blocker/Workhorse dinking (Part 2) lessons in our pickleball library.
In this video, “Blocker/Workhorse dinking (Part 1)”, coach Trey Sizemore introduces students to the importance of having roles on the court when playing doubles. Rather than playing as 2 singles players operating independently, this lesson will help the player understand his role and responsibilities. In addition, the lesson answers common questions like Who takes the lobs? Who hits the middle ball? What is the best shot for me to hit to put the team in the best position to stay in the point and ultimately win it?”
This video demonstrates the concepts of ‘Big V’ and ‘Little V’ shot coverage responsibilities for the Blocker and Workhorse roles.
This is important to learn in doubles because it is fundamental to playing pickleball effectively and enables the team to defend 100% of the court at all times.
Blocker/Workhorse dinking (Part 2) lesson focus on how the Blocker/Workhorse roles help in determining which player should take a middle ball from the opponents and where to hit it. It demonstrates 2 middle ball options (one shallow and one deeper in the kitchen) and cover who should take each, why, and where they should hit the ball for best results. This is important to understand because balls hit to the middle of your court by the opponents often cause confusion between partners and cause mistakes that lose points by the ‘wrong’ player hitting the ball, no one hitting the ball, the ball being hit to the wrong place in your opponents’ court, and more.
