The Big Match:  Juventus v Sassuolo

WOW – it looks like the embarrassing 0-3 home defeat by Fiorentina has galvanized Juventus. Cristiano Ronaldo was furious after the Fiorentina game and posted his emotions on Instagram:  "Yesterday, with a poor performance and a result far from acceptable, we closed our scheduled games for 2020, a special year in many particular ways.  Empty stadiums, COVID protocols, postponed games, long stoppages, and a very tight calendar.  But this is no excuse for anything. We know that we have to give more of ourselves, in order to play better and to win in a more consistent way.  We are Juventus!  And we simply cannot accept anything less than excellence on the pitch!  Believe in us, trust our team as much as we trust you, and we will deliver!”

It looks like Ronaldo’s team-talk worked – Juve burst into 2021 with an amazing 1-3 win in Milan to firmly add Juventus into the title race. Sassuolo, their opponents on Sunday, allowed Genoa to equalize mid-week before Raspadori sealed the win in the 83rd minute – a huge relief for Mr. De Zerbi. Mr. Pirlo’s team will be brimming with confidence after that AC Milan result.

Ronaldo will be 36 in February and his existing contact in Turin is due to expire in the summer of 2022.   However, the former Manchester United and Real Madrid attacker has hinted that he wants to still be playing professional football past the age of 40.

"It doesn't matter the age.  What is important is the mind," said Ronaldo after being named Player of the Century at the Globe Soccer Awards.  "I live in the present, in the moment.  The moment is good, I feel happy, I feel sharp and in a good moment in my life.  I hope to play many, many years more but you never know.  This is football, we don't know what is going to happen tomorrow.  When I speak to young boys I always say 'enjoy the moment' because we never know what will happen.  My eyes see the future very, very bright, so I am happy with that."

The Portugal international has been in excellent form for Juventus during the 2020-21 campaign, scoring 16 times in 14 appearances in all competitions, including 12 goals in 10 Serie A outings.

Ronaldo is famous for a remarkable jumping ability that makes him lethal in the air.  This was apparent in Ronaldo's remarkable goal against Sampdoria - elevating himself to 2.56 meters -   higher than the average NBA athlete can leap.

Ronaldo's incredible jumping is the product of a perfect athletic technique.  It's one thing to have the jump figured out in training - another to replicate it in a fast-moving game surrounded by world-class players.
